What Is Umrah?

Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah that can be performed at any time of year. Unlike Hajj which is obligatory (one of the Five Pillars of Islam) and can only be performed during specific days of Dhul Hijjah Umrah has no fixed season and takes as little as 2 3 hours to complete the core rituals. It is sometimes called the "lesser pilgrimage" but its spiritual significance is immense for Muslim pilgrims worldwide.

The Four Core Rituals of Umrah

1. Ihram Entering a state of spiritual purity. Males wear two white seamless cloths; females wear modest Islamic clothing. Ihram is entered at the Miqat (boundary point before Makkah) with a stated intention (Niyyah).
2. Tawaf Circumambulating the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction. Performed at Masjid al-Haram in Makkah.
3. Sa'i Walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa (now enclosed within the Masjid al-Haram complex) commemorating Hajar's search for water.
4. Taqsir / Halq Cutting or shaving the hair. Males shave (Halq) or cut (Taqsir) their hair; females cut a small portion of hair. This completes the Umrah and exits the state of Ihram.

How Long Does Umrah Take?

The core Umrah rituals (Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, hair-cutting) take approximately 2 4 hours to complete for most pilgrims. Many pilgrims then stay on in Makkah and Madina for extended worship, Ziyarat, and Nafl prayers. For a complete trip from Pakistan, 7 days is the recommended minimum allowing sufficient time for rituals, Madina visit, and meaningful additional worship without feeling rushed.

Documents Required for First-Time Umrah

• Original Pakistani passport minimum 8 months validity, 2 blank pages
• 4 photographs (4×6cm, light blue background, ladies with hijab)
• Meningococcal (ACYW135) vaccination certificate mandatory
• Polio vaccination certificate mandatory for Pakistani passport holders
• For women under 45: must travel with a Mehram (male guardian) or as part of a licensed group tour
• For women 45+: can travel with an organised group without Mehram under current Saudi policy

Common First-Timer Mistakes to Avoid

• Not booking NUSUK Riaz-ul-Jannah appointment you will be turned away at the gate without a pre-booked slot
• Entering Makkah without Ihram you must be in Ihram state before crossing the Miqat boundary
• Overlooking hotel proximity a hotel at 2,500m from Haram adds 1+ hour of walking daily; for first-timers, aim for under 700m
• Forgetting vaccination cards carry originals, not photocopies
• Booking flights without the visa under 2026 policy, hotel must be confirmed before visa application; visa before booking non-refundable flights

How many days is enough for first-time Umrah?

10 days is the recommended duration for first-time Umrah from Pakistan enough for the core rituals in Makkah (4 5 nights), a full Madina visit (4 nights), Ziyarat in both cities, and time to simply sit in Haram without feeling rushed. 7 days is the minimum comfortable duration.

What should a first-timer wear for Umrah?

Male pilgrims wear two white unsewn cloths (Izar and Rida) for Ihram these can be purchased in Makkah. Female pilgrims wear modest Islamic clothing (any colour) that covers the body; face and hands should remain uncovered in Ihram. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as you will cover several kilometres of marble floors daily.

Can a woman do Umrah without a Mehram?

Women under 45 must travel with a Mehram (male guardian) or as part of a licensed group tour under current Saudi policy. Women 45 and above can travel with an organised group without a Mehram. What is the NUSUK app and why do first-timers need it?

NUSUK is the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's official app for booking Umrah entry permits and Riaz-ul-Jannah appointments. All pilgrims must register on NUSUK before travel. Riaz-ul-Jannah (the area between the Prophet's ﷺ tomb and his pulpit) requires a specific timed appointment pilgrims who arrive without a booking are turned away.
