Umrah Checklist: What to Pack & Prepare
A complete, practical checklist covering documents, clothing, and essentials for a smooth Umrah journey.
Documents Pack These First
- Passport with valid Umrah visa
- Printed flight tickets and hotel confirmation
- CNIC (for domestic travel and identification)
- Vaccination certificate (meningitis and any other required vaccines)
- Multiple printed and digital copies of all the above, stored separately from originals
- Emergency contact list, including our coordinator's WhatsApp number
We recommend keeping digital photos of every document on your phone in addition to physical copies, as a backup in case anything is misplaced during travel.
Ihram Clothing (For Men)
- At least two sets of Ihram cloth (one to wear, one spare in case of need)
- A money belt or pouch that can be worn under Ihram cloth, since pockets aren't available
- Ihram-safe, unscented soap (standard scented soap conflicts with Ihram restrictions)
Clothing for Women
- Modest, comfortable abaya or similar covering for daily wear
- Comfortable, breathable fabric suited to warm weather, even in cooler months
- A light shawl or jacket for cooler evenings, particularly relevant for December travel
- Comfortable, well-broken-in walking shoes not new shoes you haven't tested
General Essentials for Everyone
- Comfortable walking shoes, broken in before the trip this matters more than almost any other packing decision given how much walking Umrah involves
- A small backpack for carrying essentials during Tawaf and daily mosque visits
- Reusable water bottle
- Basic first aid items pain relief, blister plasters, any personal prescription medication with extra supply
- Phone charger and a portable power bank, given how much phone use (Tawaf counters, communication, photos) happens during the trip
- Unscented sunscreen and lip balm, particularly for daytime outdoor walking
- A small prayer mat, though most mosque areas provide adequate carpeted space
What NOT to Over-Pack
First-time pilgrims often over-pack, particularly clothing, underestimating how much laundry facilities or affordable local laundry services near most hotels can handle during an extended stay. Unless traveling during a very short trip, packing for roughly half your trip duration and planning to do laundry partway through is usually more practical than carrying a full outfit for every single day.
Money and Payment Preparation
While many places in Makkah and Madina accept cards, having some Saudi Riyal cash on hand for smaller purchases, tips, or situations where card payment isn't available is practical. We recommend exchanging at least a modest amount before departure or immediately upon arrival, rather than relying entirely on ATM access once you're already in Saudi Arabia.
Preparing Mentally and Spiritually
Beyond physical packing, taking time before departure to learn the ritual sequence (see our step-by-step Umrah guide) and reviewing key duas (see our dua guide) genuinely reduces stress during the trip itself, allowing you to focus on worship rather than feeling uncertain about what comes next at each stage.
A Final Practical Tip
Lay out everything you plan to pack a few days before departure, and review it against this checklist one final time. It's far easier to catch a missing item while still in Pakistan than to discover it's missing once you're already at the airport or, worse, after arriving in Saudi Arabia.
Packing Differently for Different Durations
Your packing approach should scale sensibly with trip length. For a 7-day trip, packing for the full duration without relying on laundry is generally manageable and often simpler. For 15 or 21-day trips, planning for a mid-trip laundry cycle becomes genuinely practical, both to reduce luggage weight and because most hotels and nearby laundry services in Makkah and Madina are affordable and efficient, often turning around laundry within 24 hours.
Medication and Health Preparation
If you take regular prescription medication, pack enough for your full trip plus a reasonable buffer (we recommend at least 3-5 extra days' supply), since sourcing specific Pakistani-prescribed medications in Saudi Arabia isn't always straightforward or guaranteed. Carry medication in original packaging with a copy of your prescription, particularly for any controlled or less common medications, to avoid any complications at customs or airport security.
Packing for Children
Families traveling with children should pack familiar comfort items (a favorite small toy or blanket can help with adjustment to unfamiliar surroundings), child-appropriate modest clothing, any specific dietary items if your child has particular needs, and entertainment for flight time and any waiting periods. We also recommend packing a basic child first-aid kit separately from the adult kit, including child-appropriate fever and pain relief medication, since pharmacy access while managing a tired or unwell child in an unfamiliar city adds unnecessary stress that's easily avoided with advance preparation.
What Our Coordinators Recommend Most Often
Across hundreds of pilgrims we've supported, the single most common packing regret we hear about isn't something forgotten it's bringing shoes that hadn't been properly broken in before the trip, leading to blisters that affect comfort during the most walking-intensive days. We mention this specifically because it's such an easily avoidable issue: wear your intended Umrah walking shoes regularly for at least two weeks before departure, ensuring they're genuinely comfortable for extended walking before you rely on them in Makkah.
Checking Your Final List Before You Travel
As a last step, we recommend reviewing this checklist alongside your specific package inclusions if you've booked through us, your coordinator can confirm exactly what's already arranged (transport, certain toiletries provided by your hotel, etc.) versus what you genuinely need to pack yourself, helping you avoid both under-packing and unnecessary over-packing for items already covered by your trip arrangements.
A Calm Approach to Packing
Finally, try to complete your packing at least a day or two before departure rather than the night before a calm, unhurried packing process is far less likely to result in a forgotten essential than a rushed, last-minute scramble. Treating this preparation phase with the same unhurried care you hope to bring to the pilgrimage itself often sets a more grounded, peaceful tone for the entire trip ahead.
