State of Ihram
Ihram Guide
How to enter Ihram for Umrah, what men and women wear, and every Ihram restriction — explained simply.
The State of Ihram
What Ihram Is
Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters with the intention to perform Umrah or Hajj. It is entered at the Miqat and includes specific clothing for men and a set of restrictions for everyone.
Men's Ihram
Two unstitched white sheets: the izar (waist) and rida (shoulders), with sandals that leave the ankle bones visible.
Women's Ihram
Ordinary modest clothing of any plain colour. The face is normally left uncovered, and hands need not be gloved.
Intention
Ihram begins with the heart's intention plus the Talbiyah — not merely by wearing the garments.
Ihram Restrictions
What to Avoid in Ihram
Once in Ihram, both men and women avoid: applying perfume, cutting hair or nails, hunting game, contracting marriage, marital relations, and arguing or sinful speech.
Men additionally avoid stitched/fitted clothing and covering the head. Women avoid the face-veil (niqab) and gloves in Ihram, though they may drape a cloth over the face away from men if needed.
Accidentally breaking a restriction out of forgetfulness carries no penalty for a first, unintentional lapse; deliberate violations may require a fidyah (expiation). When unsure, ask a knowledgeable group leader.
Practical Tips
Wearing & Managing Ihram
Pack at least two Ihram sets so one stays clean. A wide elastic Ihram belt with a pocket keeps the izar secure and holds your documents. Unscented soap and wipes let you stay fresh without breaking the perfume restriction.
Enter Ihram before the Miqat — see our Miqat guide. For the full packing list, see the Umrah checklist.
Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Watches, glasses, rings, hearing aids, belts and sandals are allowed in Ihram. The restriction on stitched clothing applies to garments shaped to fit the body, not accessories.
Adjusting, re-tying or briefly removing the rida is fine; the state of Ihram remains as long as you have not cut hair or done the other rites. Wash and re-wear as needed.
A menstruating woman may enter Ihram and do everything except Tawaf, which requires purity. She waits until she is pure to perform Tawaf and Sa'i. Speak to us for scheduling flexibility.
