Avoid These

Common Umrah Mistakes

Most Umrah errors come from small misunderstandings about the Miqat, Tawaf and the order of the rites. Knowing them in advance keeps your Umrah sound.

📍

Crossing the Miqat late

Entering Ihram only after Jeddah or after crossing the Miqat line. Make Ihram before the boundary — often in the air.

🔄

Wrong Tawaf start

Not beginning each circuit at the Black Stone, or counting the Hijr Ismail as outside the path. Circle outside the Hijr.

🔢

Miscounting

Doing six or eight circuits or trips. Use a counter and follow your group leader.

✂️

Cutting hair early

Trimming before finishing Sa'i, or men trimming only a few strands. Cut the whole head, after Sa'i.

🏃

Starting Sa'i at Marwah

Sa'i must start at Safa and end at Marwah. Reversing this breaks the count.

🌸

Perfume in Ihram

Applying scented products after entering Ihram. Use unscented items until Ihram ends.

Other frequent mistakes: pushing and harming others to kiss the Black Stone (pointing from afar is enough), treating per-circuit du'a booklets as obligatory, women uncovering improperly in crowds, and skipping the two rak'ah near Maqam Ibrahim where space allows.

None of these should cause anxiety — an honest, unintentional slip is forgiven, and our group leaders correct issues on the spot. When unsure, pause and ask rather than guess.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Entering Ihram too late — after crossing the Miqat or only in Jeddah. Always make Ihram before the Miqat, which on many flights means doing so in the air before the crew's announcement.

Most minor, unintentional mistakes do not invalidate Umrah, though some require a fidyah. Errors in the pillars (like Tawaf or Sa'i) must be corrected. Ask a scholar or your group leader if unsure.

No. It is Sunnah when easy. Never harm others to reach it — pointing towards it with a takbir is sufficient and is what the Prophet ﷺ did in crowds.
